Composition, Songwriting, and Theory  Lessons

Private Songwriting/Composition Lessons

Composition, Songwriting, Lyric Writing, Harmony

Natalie works with a variety of composition styles, including concert music, musical theater, and songwriting. Beginning students will learn all about harmony, counterpoint, form, and part-writing which will give them the skills they need for more complex compositions. Intermediate-Advanced students will build on these skills while honing their craft and finding their voice as a composer. Songwriting lessons focus on popular songwriting, including musical theater and country music. You will learn about harmony and form, but lyric writing and also how to tell a story through song. You will also work on how to create a catchy hook, how to keep your song focused and clear, how to create a "turn" at the end, and how to grab and keep the listener's attention.

Music Theory & Musicianship Lessons

Sight-Reading, Ear-Training, Transcription, Harmony, Notation

Beginners will master fundamentals such as note-reading, keys, time-signature, rhythms, intervals, scales, chords, and harmonic progressions. Intermediate to Advanced students will build on these skills and learn part-writing and score analysis (both tonal and atonal). You will also learn how to read a vocal line by sight (without the aide of a piano), tap out rhythms, identify harmonic and melodic intervals, hear the difference between various chords in a harmonic progression, and transcribe music. Private lessons are an excellent compliment to music theory classes taught in schools, especially for any student who needs outside tutoring.

Additionally, Natalie can help students learn the art of music notation, whether by hand or with Finale.

Natalie is a composer with a Master of Music in Music Theory and Composition from New York University.

"I took composition lessons with Natalie and looking back on my work before starting with her, it was scattered, lacked structure, needed honing. She is already a crazy talented composer herself and it translates to her teaching. Natalie is really great at asking the right questions. Why did you write this? What are you trying to say with this piece? What feeling are you trying to tap into with those chords? I can attest to writing with much more confidence and just as important, REWRITING with much more confidence. If the song doesn't work she will let you know but subsequently, she will let you know what DOES work and what to build on. Very supportive, as well as very critical, in the best possible way. It means she cares about the work you're creating. So much so that after running several rounds of rewrites by her, I completely trust the product I am putting out there. I will continue to come back to Natalie to hone my craft." -- Tristan S, composition student, New York, NY
